Setting up courses>>Creating & upgrading courses
From time to time, publishers release new editions of course materials that reflect the edition cycles of published textbooks. New versions of course materials may also become available when publishers reissue a set of course materials with improved content. If a new edition or version of a course you are teaching becomes available, you will see a link to that effect under the course's name in the Courses area of the My CourseCompass page.
Note: When the New Edition or New Version link appears, it is highly recommended that you update your online course materials. Updating to the latest editions and versions ensures that you have the latest instructional materials and most current technology for delivering those materials. If you do not upgrade your course, you later may be unable to create copies of your courses due to the materials being outdated and unavailable for copy.
To use these new materials, you must upgrade to the new edition or version. If you have customized your current course, CourseCompass automatically copies any additional materials into the new course. You then place these items, learning units, and tests into the appropriate content areas to make them visible to your students.
Note: For information about which customizations are copied, see About customized materials.
To upgrade a course:
In the Courses area on the My CourseCompass page, click New Edition & Version Available, New Edition Available, or New Version Available (whichever appears) under the course's name.
Review the message that appears, then click Continue.
Important: Upgrading creates a new course in which your students must re-enroll. Make sure you are upgrading the course at an appropriate time during the year.
Locate the textbook of interest and click Contents to see the types of accompanying materials available in CourseCompass.
Click Select Course Materials next to the course materials you want to use.
A list of course components for the original course appears, with all the components selected.
Deselect any course component you do not want to copy, then click Continue.
Type a course name and, optionally, a course description.
Next to Enrollment Start Date, select the month, day, and year when you want students to start enrolling in your course, or click the calendar icon and select a date. The default is the current date.
Next to Enrollment End Date, select the month, day, and year when you want students to stop enrolling in your course, or click the calendar icon and select a date. The default is the date nine months from the current date.
Next to Course Start Date, select the month, day, and year when you plan to begin teaching the course, or click the calendar icon and select a date. The default is the current date.
Next to Course End Date, select the month, day, and year when you want to close student access to your course, or click the calendar icon and select a date. The default is the date nine months from the current date.
Note: Students cannot access this course after the course end date you set, even if you change the course end date at a later time.
Click Create Course Now.
On the Confirmation - Request Received page, note the course ID. You need to communicate the course ID to students so they can enroll in your course. After the course is created, the course ID appears in the Courses area on the My CourseCompass page.
Note: CourseCompass automatically assigns a course ID number. This number is not related to the course number assigned by your institution.
Click Create or Copy Another Course to create another course, click Log Out to exit CourseCompass, or click My CourseCompass to continue working in CourseCompass.
When CourseCompass finishes adding your course material, you receive an e-mail message.
Log in to CourseCompass (if necessary), enter the new course, and integrate the customized materials from the old course into the new course so your students can see them.
Note: Assessments that you copy from another course retain the same availability setting as in the original course.
