Assignments

You can give students an essay, term paper, or other written coursework to complete outside of CourseCompass by adding an assignment to any content area of your course. An assignment may include instructions, a point value, and an attachment. Students complete the assignment in an application, such as Microsoft Word®, and then return a file to you for grading. Once a student completes and submits an assignment, you download assignment file to review, grade the assignment, and then return it to the student with comments.

Tip: Use the Assignment content type when you want to grade or otherwise track written student work completed in an application such as Microsoft Word. Alternatively, use the Digital Dropbox to exchange files that will not be graded. Let your students know which method to use when returning assignments to you.

In addition to adding an assignment to any content area, you can also add an assignment to a folder or a learning unit.

What the students see and do

The assignment title, a description or instructions, and a link appear in the content area. Students click the View/Complete assignment link to see the instructions and download files you attached. Students then complete the assignment in an application outside of CourseCompass, such as Microsoft Word. When the assignment is due, students return to CourseCompass to upload the completed assignment file for you to review and grade. They can save interim work or submit the completed assignment.

Tracking and grading student work

Assignments are tracked in the online gradebook so you know when students have begun work on an assignment and when they have submitted it. Once students have submitted an assignment, you can download their assignment files from the gradebook to review and then grade.
