Customizing courses>>Content types

Items

You can add items to any content area in your course. You can also add an item to a folder or learning unit.

Items can contain text only; for example, an offline reading assignment or a description of a project. They can also include file attachments, for example, a document you want students to read before the next class.

What the students see and do

The item title and description appear in the content area. If you attached one or more files to the item, links to the files appear below the item title. Students click the link to open the file in the CourseCompass window. Certain types of media files can be embedded directly in the content area page, either above or below the item title. You can define embedded images as hot links to websites that launch in the CourseCompass window or a new window. If you attached compressed files (for example, .zip files), you can set an option so that the file or files are automatically extracted when the student opens them.

Tracking and grading student work

Any student work associated with an item must be tracked and graded manually. You can add items to the gradebook for this purpose.

Note: For information on setting up and using the gradebook, see Using the online gradebook.
