Learning units

Learning units enable you to structure content according to a sequence for students to follow. Depending on how you set up the learning unit, students can access the content in any order or only according to the sequence you define.

You can add a learning unit to any content area in your course. You can also add a learning unit to a folder.

Once you have created a learning unit, you add content to the learning unit and order the content according to the sequence you want students to follow. The following table shows the types of content you can add to a learning unit.

What the students see and do

The learning unit title and description appear in the content area. Students click the title to open the learning unit either in the CourseCompass window or a new one, depending on how you set up the learning unit. The first page of content appears. Students can use the arrows to the left and right of the page number to navigate through the content. They can also click the Contents button to view links to all the pages (steps) in the learning unit. If you set up the learning unit to enforce sequential viewing of the material, the links are inactive so students must view pages in sequence using the navigation arrows on each page.

Tracking and grading student work

Any assessments or assignments you include in your learning unit are tracked in the gradebook, so you know when students have begun work on the assessment or assignment and when they have submitted it. Assessments are graded automatically, but you must review and manually grade assignments in the gradebook. All other student work you include in the learning unit must be tracked and graded manually. You can add items to the gradebook for this purpose.

Note: For information on setting up and using the gradebook, see Using the gradebook.
