Customizing courses

Adding and using special character palettes

If you are teaching a foreign language course, you may want to enter special characters in your CourseCompass course content. Depending on the course materials you selected when you created your course, a special character set may already be available in your course.

CourseCompass provides the following special character palettes: French, German, Italian, or Spanish. Instructors can add (or select another) special character palette for each CourseCompass course.

When you set a special character palette to be available for your course, it will be available to both you and your students in the following CourseCompass areas: course home page, Announcements, Calendar, Staff Information, Tasks, Discussion Boards, Digital Dropbox, course menu, multiple fill-in-the-blank assessments, gradebook items, and group names and descriptions.

    1. Click the course name on the My CourseCompass page.

    2. Click Control Panel.

    3. Click Settings under Course Options.

    4. Click Special Character Palette.

    5. Select the character set you want to make available for your course. For example, select Spanish if you are teaching a Spanish course that may require students to answer test questions with accented Spanish characters.

    6. Click Submit, then click OK.

When CourseCompass text fields allow special characters, you will see a special character button to the right of the text box. Here is an example of the special character box on the course home page:

Note: The special character palette you select will be available to your students on certain CourseCompass text fields, for example, for answering multiple fill-in-the-blank assessments (if available for your course).

    1. Ensure the special character palette is available for your course.

    2. Go to a content area or text field (such as Course Home, Announcements, folders, course links, Staff Information) that supports special characters.

    3. Place your cursor in the box where you want to enter special characters.

Note: The special character is always inserted at the end of the box where you are typing, regardless of your cursor position. If you want it at a different location, you will need to cut-and-paste it to the new location.

    1. Click the special character button: special character button

The special character palette opens in a new window. Here is an example of the Italian special character palette:
