Assessing student work

About surveys

Surveys provide a way for you to collect feedback from students. For example, you can give your students a survey at the start of the course to find out about their interests and expectations, or you can create a survey for students to answer to evaluate the course. Surveys differ from tests in a number of ways; for example, they do not have correct answers or point values.

Surveys you have made available are listed in the gradebook. They have a checkmark, rather than a score, to indicate completion. You can view the distribution of student responses to survey questions from a gradebook view.

Here are the basic steps for creating a survey and making it available to students:

  1. Click Survey Manager in the Assessment area of the Control Panel.

  2. Click Add Survey to begin creating the survey.

  3. Enter a name, a description, and instructions for your students.

  4. Add questions to the survey:

  1. Select a question type.

  2. Enter the question text.

  3. Provide answers where appropriate. For example, you provide answers for a multiple-choice question.

  1. Save the survey.

  2. Add the survey to a content area.

  3. Set survey-taking options to specify availability settings (when and for how long the students have access to the survey) and presentation settings (whether students see questions one at a time or all at once).
