Using the gradebook>>Creating and managing items
Grade display options determine the format in which scores appear in the gradebook and the values used in gradebook calculations. Each gradebook item specifies a display option. When you enter or modify grades associated with an item, you must specify the grades in the appropriate format or as a raw score. Otherwise, the value you enter is ignored. For example, if the Chapter 1 Quiz uses the Letter display option, you must enter a letter grade or a raw score when manually entering or modifying grades for that quiz.
Note: You can enter raw scores no matter which display option is selected, and the gradebook will convert the score to the appropriate display format. For example, if the display option is set to Percentage and you enter 15 for a test with 25 possible points, the grade appears as 60%. If the display option is set to Letter and you enter 20 for the same test, the grade appears as B– (unless you change the default range for a B–).
CourseCompass provides the following display options. You can also add display options.
Letter – A letter grade that represents a range of percentage scores. For example, a student might receive a score of 85%, which by default translates to a B. You can enter a letter grade or raw score when entering or modifying Letter grades. You can modify this display option.
To see the default percent ranges for letter grades, modify the Letter grade display option. You can change the ranges or just view them, then click Cancel.
Percentage – The result of dividing the raw score by the total possible points, then multiplying by 100: (raw score/points possible) * 100. You can enter a percentage or a raw score when entering or modifying Percentage grades. If you are entering the grade as a percentage, you must include the % (percent symbol). For example, if a test has 50 possible points and you enter 85 rather than 85%, the student will receive 35 extra points. You cannot modify this display option.
Score – The raw score earned by the student. For example, a student might earn 60 out of a possible 75 points. You must enter a numeric value (not a percentage) when entering or modifying grades. You cannot modify this display option.
Text – Any string you want to enter. If you enter a numeric value, the gradebook interprets the number as a raw score. Any other string is calculated as a zero (0). You cannot modify this display option.
