Grading symbols in the gradebook

Every student is assigned a value for every item in the gradebook. The value is either a representation of a grade (shown using one of the available grade display options) or a symbol that indicates the status of the student's work on that item.

The table below lists the grade symbols and explains what they represent.

Tip: In the spreadsheet view of the gradebook, a key that explains the symbols appears below the spreadsheet.

Work in Progress – The padlock symbol indicates that the student has begun the assessment, assignment, or survey but has not submitted it. It does not indicate that either you or the student are "locked out."

  • If you set up the assessment so that the student must view and answer one question at a time, you can review the student's work to date by clicking the padlock and then clicking View.

  • If you set up the assessment so that the entire test is presented to the student, you will not be able to review the student's work until the student finishes and submits the test.

Notes:

  • If you allowed only one attempt on the assessment or survey, and the student experienced network or browser failure while taking the assessment or survey or submitting the assignment, the student may not be able to complete the assessment or survey until you clear the attempt. For more information, see single and multiple assessment attempts.

  • If the student starts the assessment, assignment or survey but does not submit it within three days, the padlock symbol changes to a red question mark. You can clear the assessment or assignment attempt so the student can start all over again.

No Information – The student has neither taken the assessment nor submitted the assignment. This symbol also appears for gradebook items that represent other types of student work, which are not tracked by CourseCompass. You must manually grade other types of student work.

Needs Grading – An exclamation mark appears for these reasons:

  • The student submitted the test or assignment, which is waiting for your review and grade. You must manually grade essay questions on tests and manually grade assignments.

  • The student exceeded the time limit for the assessment. In this case, the total time taken appears at the top of the assessment when you click the exclamation point and then view the assessment. You can award the student full credit for the work done or take off points for exceeding the time limit.

Grading Error – The student began the test more than three days ago, but the student never submitted it.

Completed – The student has submitted a survey. Surveys are not graded.

Note: You can click this icon and enter a grade for the survey, if you want. You can view the survey name and description and clear the student's survey attempt. You cannot view the student's responses because surveys are taken anonymously.
