Viewing details and class statistics for items

You can view details about an item, such as the number of possible points and its relative weight. You can also see statistics for class performance on the item, such as the class average, high and low scores, and standard deviation.

Note: You can view these same details for the Total and Weighted Total columns. The details for the Total column are cumulative for all items in the gradebook, except ones you exclude from calculations. The details for the Weighted Total column are also cumulative, but they are based on weighted scores, with a Points Possible value of 100. If you set up the gradebook so that grades are not weighted, these fields all read 0 or 0%.

To view details and class statistics for an item:

  1. Click the course name on the My CourseCompass page.

  2. Click Control Panel.

  3. Click Gradebook Views under Assessment.

  4. Click View Grades by Item.

  5. To view details for a specific item, click the item name.

  6. Click Item Detail to view the following information:

Detail

Description

Points Possible

The number of points students can possibly earn for the item.

Item Weight  

The weight assigned to the item relative to other items. (Only if you weight grades by item.)

Category Weight

The weight assigned to the item's category relative to other categories. (Only if you weight grades by category.)

Total Points

The total points students have earned to date for the item.

Class Average

The average number of points earned by the class, determined by dividing the Total Points value by the number of students who have received scores for the item.

Standard Deviation

The standard deviation of the individual scores for the item.

Variance

The variance of the individual scores for the item.

High Score

The highest number of points earned for the item.

Low Score

The lowest number of points earned for the item.

  1. When you are finished viewing the item statistics, click OK.

Note: You can also access the Item Options page by clicking a gradebook item in the spreadsheet view.
