Grading symbols

Every student is assigned a value for every item in the gradebook. The value is either a representation of a grade or a symbol that indicates the status of the student's work on that item.

The table below lists the grade symbols and explains what they represent.

Tip: In the spreadsheet view of the gradebook, a key that explains the symbols appears below the spreadsheet.

Work in Progress – The padlock symbol indicates that the student has begun the self-assessment survey but has not submitted it. It does not indicate that either you or the student are "locked out."

Notes:

  • If you allowed only one attempt on the self-assessment survey, and the student experienced network or browser failure while taking or submitting the survey, the student may not be able to complete the survey until you clear the attempt.

  • If the student starts the self-assessment survey but does not submit it within three days, the padlock symbol changes to a red question mark. You can clear the survey attempt so the student can start all over again.

No Information – The student has neither taken nor submitted the self-assessment survey.

Completed – The student has submitted a self-assessment survey. Surveys typically are not scored, although you can assign a score to a survey if desired.

Note: You can click this icon and enter a score for the survey, if you want. You can view the survey name and description and clear the student's self-assessment survey attempt. You cannot view the student's responses because surveys are taken anonymously.
